WVSU Enhances Medical Program with New Facilities.

ILOILO CITY: The West Visayas State University in Iloilo City is set to enhance its medical program with the addition of modern facilities. In an interview on Wednesday, WVSU President Dr. Joselito Villaruz revealed that the improvements were made possible through a PHP300 million fund facilitated by the Office of Senator Pia Cayetano since 2021. The funding has been used for constructing two annex buildings, acquiring equipment and mannequins, increasing the carrying capacity of nursing and allied health programs, and covering operating expenses, among other uses. According to Philippines News Agency, Villaruz emphasized the significant impact of these developments. He noted that the initiatives and support from Senator Pia Cayetano will help in producing more doctors by expanding student intake next year. The two annex buildings are nearing completion, with progress at 90 and 93 percent, respectively. Villaruz explained that one of the new facilities includes a skills laboratory and simulation lab where s tudents can practice their medical skills using mannequins and other materials. The focus is on simulation-based education, integrating information systems and artificial intelligence into medical training. During a brief visit to the university, Senator Cayetano expressed her pride in supporting WVSU, which, apart from UP College of Medicine, is the only state university with its own teaching hospital. She highlighted the significance of the project as a victory for both the medical students and faculty, as well as the broader community that will benefit from improved healthcare. Villaruz announced plans to admit an additional 40 students next year, increasing the student population from 120 to 160. The new cohort will be part of the West Visayas State University Expedited Select Track for Medicine (WESTMed), an accelerated program allowing students to graduate within seven years instead of the traditional nine.
