Visayas: Yellow alert status is raised anew for the Visayas grid, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday due to inadequate operating margin, according to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).
According to Philippines News Agency, Units 1 and 2 of Therma Visayas, Inc. (TVI), and Unit 3 of Panay Energy Development Corporation (PEDC), all generating units of two major coal-fired power plants, remain on forced outage, limiting the grid's capacity. The NGCP reported that the grid's available capacity is approximately 2,644 megawatts (MW) while peak demand is projected to reach 2,457 MW.
In addition to the unavailability of the three generating units of TVI and PEDC, other smaller power plants are likewise on forced outage, further contributing to a decline in the Visayas grid's capacity. Just this month alone, NGCP noted there were six power plants on forced outage, eight since May, one since March, three since 2025, two since 2024, two since 2023, and one since 2021.
Furthermore, twelve plants are currently running on derated capacities, which has resulted in a total loss of around 890.3 MW for the grid. This ongoing situation continues to impact the stability of the Visayas grid, prompting the extension of the yellow alert status.
