Davao: The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) is currently validating a report of one fatality in Region 11 (Davao Region) following a magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck Davao Oriental on Friday morning. The fatality was reportedly caused by falling debris, according to Assistant Secretary Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV, OCD's deputy administrator for administration, during an online briefing.
According to Philippines News Agency, the earthquake has also caused damage to several facilities. Notably, damage was reported at Ateneo de Davao and Mapºa Malayan Colleges Mindanao, both situated in Davao City. Furthermore, cracks were observed at the Francisco Bangoy International Airport, though the airport remains operational with no flight cancellations in Davao City.
In response to the earthquake, classes have been suspended in Davao Oriental and Davao City to allow for infrastructure assessments. In Region 10 (Northern Mindanao), reports have emerged of minor structural cracks in some facilities, specifically in schools located in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan City. Additionally, a landslide was reported in Camiguin, as noted by Alejandro.
