Baguio City Initiates License Revocation for Unauthorized Motorcycle Taxi Operators

Baguio city: The city government of Baguio has launched a crackdown on unauthorized motorcycle taxi services, initiating processes to cancel the driver's licenses of individuals caught using motorcycles to transport passengers for hire. Mayor Benjamin Magalong announced this measure during a press briefing, emphasizing the city's commitment to ensuring public safety and regulatory compliance.

According to Philippines News Agency, Mayor Magalong highlighted that motorcycles used as motorcabs pose significant safety risks and are not sanctioned for passenger transport services within the city. He pointed out that the Department of Transportation-Cordillera has not issued any franchises for such services in Baguio. Reports of increasing 'angkas' or motorcycle-for-hire services have raised concerns about public safety, as these operations lack proper driver training and do not offer passenger protection or insurance.

Mayor Magalong urged residents to avoid using these unauthorized services due to the inherent risks and the lack of accountability in case of accidents. He also cautioned that the proliferation of these services could exacerbate traffic issues and elevate accident risks on Baguio's challenging terrains.

In response, the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) has been directed to intensify deterrence efforts against 'angkas' operations. BCPO director Col. Ruel Tagel confirmed that operations are being conducted throughout the city to curb unauthorized motorcycle taxi activities.
