Manila: Bureau of Customs (BOC) Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno on Tuesday led the inspection of two shipments containing misdeclared firecrackers worth around PHP40 million at the Manila International Container Port (MICP).
According to Philippines News Agency, the shipments from China, each valued at approximately PHP20 million, were flagged by the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS) after derogatory reports indicated the presence of fireworks and firecrackers. The first shipment, declared as 'shelves,' was voluntarily abandoned by the consignee Unihome Tech Incorporated from Meycauyan, Bulacan, and arrived on June 6, 2026. The second shipment was declared as "ceramic cups" and consigned to Onig Household Supplies Trading of Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, arriving on July 22, 2026.
Upon arrival, the shipments underwent physical examination, which resulted in the discovery of fireworks and firecrackers. "We can see that our screening process is effective. We are intercepting various types of contraband, so hopefully the smugglers will stop the illegal importation. Your investment will just be wasted," Commissioner Nepomuceno said.
He further noted that the importation of finished firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices is prohibited under Republic Act 7183 (An Act Regulating the Sale, Manufacture, Distribution and Use of Firecrackers and Pyrotechnic Devices). After processing, the seized items will be turned over to the proper government offices for case filing and eventual disposal.
