Classes in Zamboanga City Suspended for Second Day Amid Continued Bad Weather

Zamboanga city: School authorities have been instructed to ensure the continuity of learning and protect students from risks by implementing alternative modes, as the suspension of face-to-face classes entered its second day here on Wednesday due to bad weather.

According to Philippines News Agency, Mayor Khymer Olaso has encouraged school officials to adopt alternative teaching methods, such as modular or online classes, to maintain learning continuity. This directive affects both public and private schools across the city.

Olaso's decision to suspend classes on Wednesday follows the ongoing adverse weather conditions caused by the southwest monsoon, as reported by the weather bureau. The suspension aligns with the Department of Education Order 022 series of 2024, which provides guidelines for halting in-person classes during disasters or emergencies.

The mayor has also urged residents to remain safe and relocate to higher ground in the event of flash floods. Additionally, he advised barangay officials and health workers to ensure the timely distribution of medicines to prevent flood-related diseases such as leptospirosis.

The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) is actively monitoring the situation across Zamboanga City's 98 barangays and is ready to deploy resources should emergencies arise.
