Manila: The Police Regional Office in Western Visayas (PRO-6) has successfully apprehended 888 individuals and seized PHP51.7 million worth of illegal fishing and logging equipment from May 22 to July 22 as part of its ongoing campaign against environmental crimes.
According to Philippines News Agency, Western Visayas police chief Brig. Gen. Randulf Tua±o announced that 669 individuals were arrested for illegal fishing activities. The operations led to the confiscation of fish valued at PHP880,605, as well as fishing equipment, motorboats, and related paraphernalia worth PHP49 million. The Iloilo Police Provincial Office reported the highest number of arrests with 224, while the Antique Police Provincial Office conducted the most operations, totaling 177.
Furthermore, the PRO-6 has intensified its efforts against illegal logging, conducting 583 operations that resulted in the apprehension of 219 individuals. These actions led to the confiscation of lumber valued at PHP1.5 million and charcoal worth PHP357,360. Tua±o emphasized that these accomplishments highlight the dedication of PRO-6 personnel to safeguard both communities and the region's natural resources.
Tua±o stated, "Our campaign against illegal fishing and illegal logging is not only about enforcing the law. It is also about protecting the environment that provides food, livelihood, and security for our communities. Every operation we conduct reflects our commitment to preserve these resources for future generations while ensuring that our laws are respected."
He also urged the public to actively participate in environmental protection efforts. "We encourage everyone to become partners in protecting our environment. If you witness illegal fishing, illegal logging, or any activity that threatens our natural resources, report it immediately to the nearest police station or the appropriate authorities. Environmental protection is a shared responsibility, and together, we can make a lasting difference for Western Visayas," Tua±o added.
The PRO-6 continues to collaborate with partner agencies, local government units, and coastal and upland communities to promote responsible resource management and ensure that law enforcement efforts are supported by public awareness and community involvement.
