Davao City Mpox Cases Climb to Six

Davao City: The number of mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) cases in Davao City has risen to six, with four new infections reported, according to the City Health Office (CHO).

According to Philippines News Agency, Dr. Sofia Corazon Zafra, CHO medical coordinator for emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, stated that the four new cases are under close monitoring, and the close contacts of these patients are also being observed. Dr. Zafra clarified that these close contacts will not be isolated as per the memorandum from the Department of Health.

Last month, Davao City reported two confirmed mpox cases. One of these patients passed away, while the other recovered. Dr. Zafra advised residents against panic buying face masks, urging the public to focus on avoiding close skin-to-skin contact, including handshakes, hugs, and kisses, due to the continued threat of the disease.

In Davao del Sur, face masks have been made mandatory following the province's first confirmed mpox case in Magsaysay town. Governor Yvonne Cagas has mandated the wearing of face masks in indoor public spaces such as markets, offices, transportation hubs, churches, and businesses. Additionally, face masks are required in crowded outdoor areas where physical distancing cannot be maintained, and in all healthcare facilities, especially when caring for suspected or confirmed mpox patients.
