Manila: The Department of Health (DOH) 5 in Bicol has issued an appeal for voluntary blood donors, pointing to a growing demand and a limited regional supply at the beginning of the year. Nicole Ann Bejo, who is the blood donor recruitment officer for the Bicol South Luzon Sub-National Reference Laboratory, highlighted the center's goal to collect 34,809 blood units by 2026 to adequately serve areas such as Albay, Masbate, Catanduanes, and Sorsogon.
According to Philippines News Agency, Nicole Ann Bejo emphasized the critical need for blood donations, stating, "Please consider donating blood, as many patients depend on it daily. Imagine needing it yourself and finding the blood supply at centers or facilities insufficient. Your donation can help maintain an adequate supply." Bejo shared these remarks during a recent press conference.
Bejo also pointed out that blood collections are typically lower in the first quarter of the year. Additionally, the unrest of Mayon Volcano has disrupted mobile blood drives in affected areas. The center is currently working on organizing donation drives in evacuation centers, pending necessary approvals.
Eligible donors are individuals aged 18 to 60, who weigh at least 50 kilograms, and are in good health. All donated blood undergoes screening for infectious diseases to ensure safety.
