DOLE Urges Employers and Workers to Agree on Compressed Workweek Setup

Manila: Companies and workers must hold dialogues before implementing a compressed workweek setup, a Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) official said Tuesday. DOLE spokesperson and Assistant Secretary Lennard Serrano emphasized the importance of mutual agreements between management and employees when planning to adopt this arrangement.

According to Philippines News Agency, Serrano highlighted that discussions between workers and employers are crucial, as they are aware of which jobs can fit into the compressed workweek setup. He stressed the importance of fair treatment and non-discrimination in discussions regarding who can participate in the program. Serrano also noted that wages, benefits, and work performed should be equal and fair under the new arrangement.

Serrano further explained that the protection and safety of workers must be ensured in the compressed workweek setup. He described it as a system where the usual 40 working hours over five days could be done in four days, resulting in more than 10 hours of work per day. The nature of the establishments or industries should be considered to ensure the welfare and safety of workers.

The DOLE is studying alternative work arrangements to help mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices due to developments in the Middle East. Other options under consideration include flexible schedules and telecommuting.
