Sagay city: Officials from the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Science High School (DOST-PSHS) System conducted a site inspection in Negros Occidental to select a location for a new campus, which is anticipated to be completed by 2027. Sagay City Mayor Leo Rafael Cueva announced that he hosted the delegation led by PSHS System Executive Director Dr. Ronnalee Ortega and DOST-Negros Occidental Provincial Director Allan Francis Dara-ug during their visit on September 29.
According to Philippines News Agency, Sagay City and San Carlos City are under consideration as potential sites for the new campus. In Sagay City, the local government has proposed an initial five-hectare area to accommodate facilities such as academic and laboratory buildings, a science and technology center, an outdoor court, and faculty housing. The DOST aims to complete the project by 2027, with a year allocated for preparation, site development, construction, and other necessary requirements before the campus becomes operational.
The DOST-PSHS System currently operates 16 campuses nationwide, including three in the Visayas region. These campuses are located in Iloilo City in Western Visayas, Argao in Cebu in Central Visayas, and Palo in Leyte in Eastern Visayas. Earlier this year, the Senate and House of Representatives ratified the final version of the Expanded PSHS System Act, marking a significant advancement in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education reform. The proposed legislation seeks to extend the reach of the PSHS System by establishing more campuses and enhancing institutional capacity to accommodate a larger number of students.
