DOT: PH Gov’t Prioritizing Safety of S. Korean Tourists

Manila: The Philippine government, through the Department of Tourism (DOT), on Wednesday assured that the safety of South Korean tourists is a priority. Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco made the statement following calls by the South Korean side to strengthen protection for its nationals amid the reported rise of violent crime rates against South Koreans residing or visiting the country.

According to Philippines News Agency, Frasco emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating that the government has called on various agencies to collaborate in ensuring the safety of South Korean tourists and all visitors to the Philippines. In an interview in Makati City, she highlighted the DOT's close coordination with the South Korean government, specifically with Korean Ambassador to the Philippines Lee Sang-hwa, to maintain confidence among South Korean visitors.

Frasco further mentioned that the DOT is working with law enforcement agencies and has requested the Philippine National Police to increase personnel and ensure heightened police visibility in areas popular with South Korean tourists. The DOT has already trained over 8,000 police officers on the basic principles of tourist safety and has expanded the program to include barangay personnel in remote destinations.

A decline in South Korean arrivals was noted earlier, with only 395,059 visitors recorded in the first quarter of the year compared to 458,619 in 2024. Frasco attributed this decline to factors beyond the country's control, such as the weakened Korean won, which has affected the South Korean outbound travel market.

In addition to safety measures, Frasco stated that the Philippines is enhancing promotional activities in South Korea to attract more visitors. South Korea continues to be the Philippines' top source market for international visitors.
