DOTr Targets Partial Opening of Common Station in Early 2028

Manila: The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is setting its sights on the partial opening of the Unified Grand Central Station, commonly referred to as the Common Station, in the first quarter of 2028. This follows the recent approval of a variation order for the project by the Economy and Development Council (EDC).

According to Philippines News Agency, acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez mentioned in a radio interview that the DOTr is working towards achieving at least interim operations of the Common Station within the specified timeline. Lopez explained that the original contract was terminated, leading to discussions with the Light Rail Manila Corporation about continuing the project through a variation order. The necessary government procedures for this variation have been completed with EDC's approval.

Lopez confirmed that the construction can now commence, with the goal of achieving partial operations by early 2028. Meanwhile, a temporary solution has been arranged by the DOTr to facilitate commuter transfers during the ongoing construction of the Common Station.

The acting secretary emphasized the importance of ensuring that once North Avenue and Metro Rail Transit Line 7 (MRT-7) are completed and operational, commuters will have access to the concourse and platform. Additionally, discussions are underway with Trinoma mall management to provide an access route for commuters heading to the MRT-3, eliminating the need for them to walk on the road.

Lopez assured that the full completion of the Common Station is targeted for 2030, promising a more convenient transfer experience for commuters. The project aims to integrate Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1), MRT-3, MRT-7, and eventually the Metro Manila Subway into a single hub along North Avenue in Quezon City. The station will also feature an intermodal integrated transport system at ground level, offering various departure options for passengers, including buses, jeepneys, and taxis.
