Manila: The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will continue providing medical and burial assistance to Filipinos who would need these services during the 10-day 'ayuda' ban imposed by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) from May 2 to 12, a senior agency official said Monday.
According to Philippines News Agency, DSWD spokesperson Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao announced in a news release that while the department's Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS) and Ayuda sa Kapos Ang Kita Program (AKAP) are included in the government aid affected by the 'ayuda' ban, medical and burial aid provisions have been granted an exemption by the Comelec. This exemption was outlined in a memorandum issued by the Comelec on March 18, allowing the continuation of these critical services during the election period.
Dumlao expressed gratitude towards the Comelec for this decision, emphasizing that it enables the DSWD to continue fulfilling its mandate of providing necessary aid to eligible beneficiaries. She highlighted the importance of ensuring that funeral and medical assistance are accessible to the people irrespective of the election period.
The DSWD ensures that both funeral and medical assistance are provided either in cash or through guarantee letters to meet the needs of the clients, following a thorough assessment by social workers. Dumlao assured that the DSWD would maintain compliance with Comelec's conditions, which include preventing elective officials and candidates from participating in the offsite distribution of cash assistance.
Dumlao reiterated the department's commitment to safeguarding its programs and services from political influences, ensuring that all aid distribution is conducted impartially and in accordance with established guidelines.
