Tacloban: The Eastern Visayas Medical Center (EVMC) has announced its first-ever multiple organ donation and retrieval procedure, marking a significant advancement in its life-saving medical interventions in the region. A male patient, who was declared brain dead, donated his liver, kidney, and cornea on August 19, offering a new lease on life to patients awaiting transplants.
According to Philippines News Agency, Dr. Frances Marie Roa-Lingad, a senior medical specialist at EVMC, highlighted the profound impact of this generous act. She shared on social media that the donation will bring renewed hope to individuals suffering from end-stage renal disease, liver disease, and corneal blindness. The retrieval operations were executed by surgeons and medical teams from both EVMC and the National Kidney Transplant Institute.
Organ donation coordinators and nurses played a crucial role in managing the sensitive process of obtaining family communication and consent, ensuring the procedure was conducted respectfully and professionally. Dr. Lingad emphasized that this event is a significant step forward for Eastern Visayas, enhancing the region's capacity for specialized medical care. She expressed hope that this success would inspire more individuals to consider organ donation.
Organ donation involves a deceased individual or their family authorizing the removal of organs for transplantation, potentially saving or improving the lives of others. This altruistic act represents a critical component in addressing the needs of patients requiring transplants.
