Manila: Former Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Bulacan district engineer Henry Alcantara has returned approximately PHP110 million to the government, as announced by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Department of Justice (DOJ) has verified the recovery of these funds, which were previously misappropriated. President Marcos, in a video message, emphasized the administration's dedication to reclaiming stolen public assets and holding accountable those involved in corruption. Marcos also mentioned that Alcantara is expected to return an additional PHP200 million within the next two weeks, reinforcing the government's commitment to financial restitution.

Alcantara, who was responsible for overseeing the first district of Bulacan, managed 13 localities, including flood-prone areas such as Hagonoy, Baliwag, Calumpit, and Malolos. His office was notable for having the largest project cost among DPWH's implementing offices, with flood control projects amounting to PHP28.9 billion from 2022 to 2025, as noted on the Sumbong ng Pangulo website.

Following his dismissal from government service, Alcantara was found guilty of several administrative offenses, including disloyalty, grave misconduct, gross neglect of duty, and conduct prejudicial to the public interest. Acting Justice Secretary Fredderick Vida stated that the returned sum is part of a larger PHP300 million restitution that Alcantara has committed to. Vida clarified that this restitution is a prerequisite for potential state witnesses in the ongoing flood control corruption scandal, but it does not guarantee immunity from future charges.

The funds returned by Alcantara will be deposited with the Land Bank of the Philippines, where their authenticity will be verified, ensuring the proper handling and allocation of the recovered assets.
