First-Time Voters Flock to Registration Offices in Antique Amid New Campaign

Antique: First-time voters were among those who flocked early to the municipal election offices of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Antique following the resumption of registration on Friday. Lawyer Wil Arce±o, the Comelec Assistant Regional Election Director for Western Visayas, noted that the Municipal Election Officers (MEO) reported a significant turnout of 15-year-olds registering for the first time, particularly for the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) election.

According to Philippines News Agency, the registration process has been opened to accommodate new voters until August 10, with offices operating on holidays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Arce±o expressed that these first-time voters are eager to participate in the electoral process, emphasizing the importance of engaging young citizens in democratic activities.

Arce±o further explained that Comelec's efforts are also focused on assisting vulnerable sectors, including persons with disabilities, pregnant women, and senior citizens, during the registration period. The services offered at the registration centers include the registration of new voters, reactivation and correction of entries, or changes in voter status.

Prospective voters are required to present a birth certificate and an identification card, which can either be a school ID or a National ID issued by the Philippine Statistics Authority. However, barangay or police certifications are no longer accepted by Comelec for registration purposes. In cases where new voters are unable to provide a birth certificate or ID, a family member may sign an Oath of Certification on their behalf.
