Hontiveros to Stay Independent, Vows to Strengthen Senate Opposition

Manila: Senator Risa Hontiveros on Wednesday stated her commitment to maintaining an independent stance in the Senate as questions arise concerning the future of the chamber's minority bloc ahead of the 20th Congress. Speaking to reporters after filing cases against Michael Maurilio and six vloggers at the Department of Justice Prosecution Service, Hontiveros acknowledged the potential scenario of becoming the Senate's sole minority member but expressed her determination to stand firm.

According to Philippines News Agency, Hontiveros's comments followed reports indicating that members of the prospective minority bloc have pledged their support for Senate President Francis "Chiz" Escudero. One senator is reported to have endorsed a resolution backing Escudero's leadership. Despite these developments, Hontiveros emphasized her dedication to strengthening the opposition both within the Senate and throughout the country.

She further elaborated that the Senate blocs are not yet finalized and that decisions regarding the formation of the majority and minority will be concluded on July 28, when Congress officially opens its session. Hontiveros remarked on the ongoing discussions concerning the potential composition of these blocs, which she will consider before making her final decision.

On the topic of impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte, Hontiveros dismissed claims that the process had stalled, asserting that the Senate impeachment court remains operational. She noted that there is no requirement for a formal motion to reconvene the impeachment court on July 29.
