House Prosecution Team Takes Stand Against Fake News Ahead of Impeachment Trial

Manila: The prosecution team of the House of Representatives is undertaking the necessary steps to counter any rise in misinformation and disinformation in the anticipated impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, its spokesperson Lanao del Sur Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong said Saturday.

According to Philippines News Agency, Adiong stated that alongside preparing for the trial itself, the team is focusing on measures to combat the spread of fake news, which he identified as a major challenge expected to arise leading up to the proceedings. His appointment as spokesperson is intended to ensure that information regarding the trial is disseminated accurately and promptly.

Adiong emphasized the importance of appointing a spokesperson to counter any false narratives, stating, "That's one of the reasons why we appointed a spokesperson - to counter any false narrative." He highlighted the main purpose of the House prosecution team as providing clarity to the public by combating fake news.

The House prosecution team plans to conduct regular briefings once the trial begins. Adiong urged the public to actively monitor the impeachment trial, describing it as a sacred duty involving the accountability mechanism of the Constitution, which affects all stakeholders.

The Senate has convened as an impeachment court and issued a writ of summons to both the prosecution and Duterte's defense team. The House prosecution team is currently awaiting the defense team's comments on the articles of impeachment, due on June 1. Adiong expressed hope that the Senate would schedule a pre-trial soon, where ground rules, evidence markings, and potential witnesses from both sides will be identified, providing insight into how the impeachment trial will proceed.
