Iloilo: The Iloilo Provincial Health Office (IPHO) recognized 127 stakeholders as health champions during the Health Excellence and Leadership (HEAL) Awards, distributing PHP2.93 million in prizes on Thursday.

According to Philippines News Agency, IPHO Health Systems Support Division Chief Dr. Wendel Marcelo explained that the awards were intended to honor and recognize local government units, health facilities, health workers, retirees, and development partners in health for their excellent performance and leadership. The event aimed to spotlight the efforts of those who have shown outstanding implementation of local health systems and health service delivery programs using specific evaluation criteria.

The awards comprised 117 program awards, with the most coveted being the top 10 performing local government units (LGUs) recognized for their overall excellence in implementing local health systems and service delivery. Passi City led the list of awardees, followed by the municipalities of Pavia, Carles, Batad, Concepcion, Tigbauan, Lambunao, San Enrique, Guimbal, and Pototan.

Passi City Mayor Stephen Palmares expressed that the award would inspire them to introduce more health programs within their local governments. He expressed satisfaction with their progress from the 10th position last year to the top spot this year.

Provincial Administrator Raul Banias remarked that despite the achievements, there is a need to address ongoing public health challenges. He highlighted concerns such as high malnutrition rates and literacy issues, as noted by the Second Congressional Commission on Education.
