Manila: The Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) launched the country's first rail-based automated fare collection system (AFCS) that enables commuters to pay using bank cards, digital wallets, and QR codes within a single interoperable platform. This initiative, which commenced with a 'piso' (one peso) promotional fare, is available until July 31.
According to Philippines News Agency, the project, named the LRT-2 National Standards Automated Fare Collection System Proof of Concept Project, was inaugurated at Legarda Station in Manila. Transportation Undersecretary for Railways Timothy John Batan stated that the new system aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to enhance passenger experience.
Batan emphasized the flexibility of payment options, allowing commuters to use various bank cards and digital wallets, and facilitating payments through multiple devices, including smartphones. He noted that this variety of payment choices fosters competition among card issuers, enabling promotions like the one-peso cashback offer from Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation (RCBC).
The introduction of this system effectively resolves the card shortages that have historically troubled rail commuters. Batan remarked on the system's potential to broaden the range of Automated Fare Collection System providers and maintenance options for rail operators across various lines, thereby accelerating fare system expansion and improving efficiency.
Finance Secretary Frederick Go highlighted that passengers can utilize Social Security system bank cards, RCBC Mastercard, and RCBC Visa credit cards to benefit from the cashback promotion. During the event, Turkish Ambassador to the Philippines Niyazi Evren Akyol demonstrated the system's international compatibility by using a Turkish credit card for an LRT-2 ride.
Information and Communications Technology Secretary Henry Aguda expressed that the new AFCS will advance the Philippine transportation sector towards international standards. He linked the initiative to President Marcos' previous state visit to India, where the efficiency and affordability of India's digital payment system were noted by government officials.
Aguda also indicated that the government, spearheaded by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, is pursuing plans to make overseas remittances more affordable for overseas Filipino workers, following the successful AFCS launch.
