Manila: The Philippines is ready to deepen cooperation with other nations to confront 'unpredictable' security challenges in the Indo-Pacific, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said Wednesday, stressing that Manila will never compromise its sovereignty even as it strengthens alliances. Speaking at the inaugural Manila Strategy Forum, Marcos underscored the country's role 'at the forefront' of regional tensions, citing daily harassment faced by Philippine vessels and fisherfolk in the West Philippine Sea.
According to Philippines News Agency, the President highlighted that the most significant threat to peace and stability exists within the Indo-Pacific region. He emphasized that this is not merely an opinion but a fact, as government vessels and fisherfolk continue to face harassment within their own waters, due to illegal and aggressive actions in the South China Sea.
The longstanding maritime dispute between the Philippines and China over parts of the West Philippine Sea, which Beijing claims entirely, was also addressed. Despite a 2016 arbitral ruling favoring Manila and invalidating Beijing's claims, tensions remain high. Marcos stressed the importance of collective action, describing current challenges as borderless.
The President discussed the evolution of the Philippines' alliance with the United States, highlighting its progression towards more comprehensive engagements with multiple nations. He cited growing partnerships through joint maritime activities with countries such as the United States, Japan, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, as well as trilateral economic projects like the Luzon Economic Corridor with Washington and Tokyo.
Marcos emphasized the interconnectedness of security and economic prosperity, stating that mature security alliances should not lead to complacency. While open to cooperation, he reaffirmed that respecting the Philippines' sovereignty is non-negotiable.
Looking ahead, Marcos noted the upcoming opportunities presented by the Philippines' 2026 chairmanship of ASEAN and the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations with the United States. These occasions will serve as platforms to promote a free and open Indo-Pacific that is connected, inclusive, and prosperous.
