Marikina, Makati Implement 4-Day Workweek to Conserve Energy

Marikina: The city governments of Marikina and Makati have announced the implementation of a four-day workweek as a measure to conserve energy and reduce fuel consumption in response to rising global oil prices due to the ongoing Middle East crisis. Under Executive Order No. 05, Series of 2026, signed by Marikina City Mayor Maan Teodoro, the new work schedule for city government offices will be from Monday to Thursday, operating from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

According to Philippines News Agency, this new schedule, effective March 9, allows employees to fulfill their 40-hour workweek while contributing to reduced electricity usage. Mayor Teodoro emphasized that the initiative is part of a national effort to conserve energy. Essential services and field operations in Marikina, such as the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, street maintenance teams, and public safety units, will continue to operate fully.

In Makati City, Mayor Nancy Binay announced a similar temporary implementation of a four-day onsite workweek at City Hall, with hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Thursday, starting March 16. This adjustment aligns with Memorandum Circular No. 114 from the Office of the President, directing government agencies to adopt measures for energy conservation, including a four-day onsite work arrangement.

Mayor Binay stated that the city supports the national government's energy conservation initiatives while ensuring that vital services remain accessible to residents. City officials have assured the public that essential services will continue uninterrupted, and residents are advised to check My Makati on Facebook for updates on specific office schedules.
