Mayor Highlights Importance of Earthquake Drills Following 4.8 Magnitude Tremor

Baguio city: Mayor Roderick Awingan emphasized the significance of regular earthquake drills in the capital town as residents and employees successfully adhered to safety protocols during a magnitude 4.8 earthquake that affected Baguio City and surrounding areas.

According to Philippines News Agency, Mayor Awingan remarked that the actions taken during the earthquake mirrored the drills, underscoring the importance of incorporating these practices into daily life. "We hope this becomes part of our culture - to stay calm, go under the table, walk calmly toward open grounds, wait for assessment, and only return once the building is declared safe," Awingan stated in an interview.

Municipal employees promptly executed the 'duck, cover, and hold' technique and evacuated to the safety of the municipal hall grounds. In response to the tremor, work and classes in La Trinidad were suspended as a precautionary measure.

Structural inspections were swiftly carried out on the municipal hall and other buildings. Meanwhile, in neighboring Baguio City, the City Buildings and Architecture Office (CBAO) dispatched technical personnel to examine schools, malls, and other structures for potential damage. The city also saw the suspension of work and classes.

The Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center experienced an influx of patients suffering from panic attacks in the emergency room. To address this, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) initiated the provision of psychological first aid and conducted welfare checks at hospitals.

Albert Mogol, the regional director of the Cordillera Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) and Office of Civil Defense-CAR, instructed all local DRRM councils to evaluate possible damages and ensure public safety in the aftermath of the earthquake.
