Mati city: A mining firm operating in Mati City, Davao Oriental, has pledged its continued support for the protection of the Mt. Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary, while reaffirming its commitment to the livelihoods of more than 1,800 mine workers and thousands more in related industries.
According to Philippines News Agency, Hallmark Mining Corp. (HMC) responded to concerns raised by the provincial government of Davao Oriental, emphasizing that responsible mining and environmental stewardship remain central to its operations. HMC operates the Pujada Nickel Project in Mati City, Davao Oriental. The company acknowledged the significance of Mt. Hamiguitan, stating, 'We understand and share the deep concern for Mt. Hamiguitan, a symbol of life and pride for all Oriental Dabawenyos.'
During a stakeholders' dialogue on Oct. 6, Davao Oriental Governor Nelson Dayanghirang expressed concerns that mining operations could destabilize a road network being built to connect several barangays. He emphasized the importance of not compromising the integrity of Mt. Hamiguitan and infrastructure projects for short-term gains.
HMC addressed these concerns by highlighting its Environmental Protection and Enhancement Program, which includes safeguards such as siltation ponds, collector sumps, and active monitoring by a multi-partite monitoring team. The company also implements nature-based solutions to nurture biodiversity and prevent harm to surrounding ecosystems.
The firm recognizes the economic impact of its operations, noting that each job supports a family. HMC contributes significantly in taxes and fees that benefit local and national programs. Additionally, through its Social Development and Management Program and Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, the company supports education, healthcare, and basic services in its host communities.
HMC expressed willingness to engage in dialogue with provincial officials, advocating for unity through dialogue, cooperation, and shared responsibility to ensure a thriving and sustainable Davao Oriental for future generations.
