Nagasaki: Japan's Nagasaki and Okinawa have been selected for The New York Times' list of "52 places to go in 2026." The US daily placed the southwestern Japan city of Nagasaki 17th on the list.
According to Philippines News Agency, the newspaper highlighted that the US atomic bombing of Nagasaki in the closing days of World War II missed its mark, sparing the urban core from damage. The New York Times described this preservation as giving the city center a "sliding-door surrealness," noting that it was supposed to be destroyed but somehow survived. The feature emphasized the significance of visiting Nagasaki as the threat of nuclear proliferation spreads globally.
The New York Times also introduced various attractions in Nagasaki, including an 800-year-old camphor tree and several food spots. Among these is a confectionery shop that has been selling cakes since 1624, offering visitors a taste of the city's historical culinary delights.
