Baguio: A cardiologist at the Department of Health (DOH)-run Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center (BGHMC) has emphasized that food intake contributes more than 50 percent to a person's heart health, highlighting the need for individuals to be mindful of their dietary habits.
According to Philippines News Agency, Dr. Karla Rhea Rillera-Posadas, Medical Specialist II at the BGHMC's Department of Internal Medicine, noted during the 'Kapihan' session on Wednesday that food plays a significant role in heart health, accounting for more than half of its condition. This health discussion was part of the "Heart Month" observance this February.
Posadas pointed out that an improper diet increases the risk of stroke, even for individuals who engage in regular exercise. She explained that hospital admissions for hypertension, ischemic heart disease, and stroke tend to rise during and after the holiday season due to frequent and widespread partying. She urged the public to take care of their hearts, emphasizing the importance of maintaining heart health.
As a recommendation, Posadas advised individuals to control their food portions by using smaller plates or bowls, consume more low-calorie, nutrient-rich foods like fruits and vegetables, and eat smaller portions of salty, processed, or fast foods. She also suggested selecting whole grains such as whole wheat flour, whole grain bread, wheat bread, high-fiber cereals, and brown rice.
Posadas further recommended adopting a Mediterranean diet, which is characterized by a high intake of fruits and vegetables, whole grain bread or rice, extra virgin olive oil as a fat source, moderate consumption of fish, cheese, and yogurt, poultry, minimal red meat and sweets, and a moderate amount of wine. She highlighted the advantages of the Mediterranean diet, including a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, support for healthy blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol, as well as promoting a healthy weight.
Additionally, Posadas mentioned that stress contributes at least 10 percent to heart problems. She advised finding ways to relieve stress by adopting a positive outlook, avoiding stressful situations, and engaging in activities such as exercise or walking to help alleviate stress and benefit heart health.
