Remulla to Bring Transparency to Office of the Ombudsman

Manila: Incoming Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla announced his intention to make the Office of the Ombudsman more transparent and accessible to the general public. He emphasized the need for openness in the office's operations during a press briefing at the Department of Justice (DOJ).

According to Philippines News Agency, Remulla expressed his plans to establish a media office to facilitate more interviews and news dissemination from the Ombudsman's office. He stressed that people are seeking transparency and accountability, which necessitates increased communication about the office's activities.

Remulla, who is scheduled to take his oath on Thursday, highlighted the Ombudsman's role beyond prosecutorial duties, focusing on ensuring governmental accountability. He mentioned the importance of monitoring government actions and continuing the collaboration between the DOJ and the Ombudsman, particularly in prosecuting public officials with lower salary grades in regional trial courts.

He also aims to implement innovations from the DOJ National Prosecution Service to assess cases before proceeding, aiming to prevent nuisance suits. Remulla emphasized the need for high standards and the elimination of office weaponization, advocating for strong evidence in cases.

Remulla proposed continuous trials to expedite proceedings and reduce delay tactics, ensuring a smooth trial process through effective evidence preparation and process benchmarking.

Furthermore, Remulla assured that the pending case against Vice President Sara Duterte regarding confidential funds will be thoroughly evaluated. Reports already with the Office of the Ombudsman will be reviewed, and consultations with relevant handlers will take place before any further action.

In the interim, Justice Undersecretary Fredderick Vida will serve as the officer in charge of the DOJ. Vida, responsible for the Financial, Administration, and Personnel Cluster, previously served as the mayor of Mendez-Nu±ez town in Cavite province.
