Manila: Senator Mark Villar has confirmed his attendance at the ongoing investigation by the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI), an official announced on Monday. ICI spokesperson Brian Hosaka stated that, in addition to Villar, contractor couple Pacifico "Curlee" Discaya and Cezarah Rowena "Sarah" Discaya are also set to appear before the commission.
According to Philippines News Agency, the hearings are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday. The ICI is actively organizing these sessions while also focusing on administrative tasks, case building, and evidence review. Last Thursday, the commission formally requested Senator Villar's presence to provide testimony.
ICI Chair Andres Reyes Jr. noted that Villar is expected to testify under oath, discussing aspects related to the planning, budgeting, execution, supervision, and monitoring of flood control and other infrastructure projects during his tenure as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) secretary from 2016 to 2021. Villar has previously denied allegations of using his influence to award PHP18.5 billion in contracts to a company owned by his cousin.
Meanwhile, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla expressed regret over Senator Panfilo Lacson's decision to step down as chair of the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee. Remulla commented, "Sana di na nya ituloy (I hope he desists), but that is a matter for the Senate as an independent body."
