Cebu: Thailand and Cambodia's agreement to sustain talks and pursue a solution to their existing border conflict during the May leaders' summit in Cebu continues to hold, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Thursday.
According to Philippines News Agency, at a trilateral meeting led by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. last May 7, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul agreed to prevent actions that could escalate their dispute. The DFA spokesperson for ASEAN Affairs, Dax Imperial, highlighted in a press conference in Pasay City that the decisions made by leaders during the summit are holding strong, with ASEAN showing full support.
The Philippines, as the chair, expressed satisfaction with the current status, noting the absence of major incidents and considering it progress towards a peaceful resolution. During the May trilateral, the leaders of Cambodia and Thailand committed to rebuilding trust and confidence and gradually restoring bilateral relations-a commitment symbolized by a historic handshake in the presence of President Marcos.
Earlier, political analyst Froilan Calilung remarked that the Philippine-led trilateral meeting sent a strong message of the country's dedication to resolving conflicts amicably as this year's ASEAN chair.
