Tokyo Students Turn to Mudflats, AI to Study Urban Biodiversity

Tokyo: High school students in Tokyo are taking part in a series of unconventional initiatives that highlight the city's efforts to promote biodiversity, environmental awareness, and disaster resilience. At Tokyo Metropolitan Shiba Commercial High School, located near the capital's waterfront, members of the Mudflat Club regularly conduct hands-on activities at the WATERS Takeshiba complex. Students join monthly Mudflat Open Days, where they interact with researchers and local children while studying the area's marine life.

According to Philippines News Agency, club member Taguchi Kumino said that direct exposure to the mudflat ecosystem deepened her understanding of environmental issues, particularly waste pollution. "We learned about waste in class, but seeing microplastics and other trash firsthand was shocking," she said, adding that the experience encouraged her to talk more openly with family and friends about reducing waste. The club aims to promote appreciation for the area's natural habitat by selling 200 copies of a student-created picture book, "Visit to a Mudflat."

In central Tokyo, students at Tokyo Metropolitan Hibiya High School have been documenting the unexpected biodiversity found on campus through their Weed Research Club. Using a field guide titled "Flora of Hibiya High School," members have created a 'weed map' and even discovered rare plants, including corydalis, an endangered species on the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's Red List. Club president Tsutsumi Yugo said the discovery underscores the importance of protecting biodiversity even in highly urbanized environments. "Knowing an endangered plant exists here gave us a sense of responsibility," he said. The group continues to study how plants and city life can coexist sustainably.

Beyond youth-led initiatives, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) is also expanding the city's resilience strategy by integrating digital technologies into its coastal defenses. More than 1.5 million people reside in low-lying 'zero-meter zones' that rely on infrastructure to prevent flooding during high tide. The TMG is enhancing preparedness through real-time systems, including an online storm surge information dashboard, an address-based flood risk search tool, and an AI-driven model capable of forecasting tide levels up to 15 hours in advance. Officials are also training to use drones for safer inspections during emergencies.

The city's AI water-level prediction system was showcased at the 2025 Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona. Multilingual functions have been added to ensure both residents and visitors can access risk information. The initiatives reflect Tokyo's push to combine youth engagement, environmental stewardship, and technology-driven disaster preparedness.
