Up to 17 Cyclones Anticipated in Philippine Area of Responsibility Until January – PAGASA

Manila: Up to 17 cyclones are anticipated to develop or enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) from this month until January 2026, according to the weather bureau. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) provided this forecast on Friday.

According to Philippines News Agency, PAGASA expects two to three cyclones to affect the country in August. The bureau is monitoring a low pressure area (LPA) outside the PAR, which developed into a tropical depression around 2 p.m. Friday. This system was last located 1,350 kilometers east northeast of extreme Northern Luzon, though it is not expected to directly impact the country.

The southwest monsoon is expected to continue bringing rain to several areas across Luzon. For the remaining months, PAGASA forecasts two to four cyclones in September and October, two or three in November, one or two in December, and zero or one in January.

PAGASA also mentioned the potential development of a tropical cyclone-like vortex in the eastern part of its monitoring domain from August 1 to 7. However, this system has a slim chance of intensifying into a cyclone. Should it enter the PAR from August 8 to 14, it remains unlikely to develop into a cyclone.
