Baghdad: Filipinos have been told to avoid unnecessary travel to Iraq due to the "prevailing security situation in the region."
According to Philippines News Agency, the Philippine Embassy in Baghdad issued a statement urging Filipino nationals to monitor ongoing news and contact the Embassy Hotline at (+964 740 810 5240) for emergencies. The advisory further emphasized that Filipinos should avoid unnecessary travel to Iraq due to the current regional security issues.
The embassy also advised Filipinos already in Iraq to avoid public places, remain vigilant, and exercise caution. They should stay informed about the situation by monitoring news updates. The country remains under Alert Level 3 status, indicating that "violent disturbances or external aggression" are occurring in certain areas.
The embassy's warning was issued a day after the United States Department of State ordered the departure of non-emergency US government personnel from Iraq. Although no specific reason was provided for this partial evacuation, it was noted to be due to "heightened regional tensions."
Reports from New York-based CBS News indicated that US officials have been informed of Israel's readiness to initiate an operation against Iran. In response, Iran has warned that it would "boldly target" US military bases within its reach if a conflict is imposed on Tehran.
These developments occur as US-Iran talks are expected to take place in Oman on June 15, aiming to negotiate a new nuclear deal.
