New Commander of Philippine Army’s 802nd Infantry Brigade Pledges to Continue Anti-Insurgency Efforts

Leyte: The new commander of the Philippine Army's 802nd Infantry Brigade (IB) has committed to furthering the anti-insurgency efforts in Leyte Island and parts of Samar provinces. Col. Rico Amaro, who recently assumed the position of acting commander, has called for collaboration between government and private sectors to combat insurgency from urban centers to remote and disadvantaged areas.

According to Philippines News Agency, during the turnover ceremony, Col. Amaro highlighted that his leadership would focus on maintaining the welfare and morale of the soldiers. He stressed that the fight against insurgency would be conducted with a focus on human rights and the well-being of troops and communities. Amaro, formerly the brigade's deputy commander, emphasized the importance of a relentless but compassionate approach.

Amaro also reiterated his support for ongoing government initiatives that encourage communist rebels to surrender and reintegrate into society. He urged stakeholders to continue their support for these programs. The leadership change follows the retirement of Brig. Gen. Noel Vestuir, who led the 802nd IB to significant achievements against insurgent groups.

Under the command of Brig. Gen. Vestuir, the brigade successfully dismantled several armed groups, notably the Apoy and Bugsok Platoons in Southern Samar and Platoon 2 of Island Committee Levox in Leyte. These efforts reduced the number of active rebel combatants significantly, contributing to the improved peace in Leyte, Southern Leyte, Biliran, Samar, and Eastern Samar.

The 802nd IB's area of responsibility covers the provinces of Leyte, Biliran, and the southern parts of Samar and Eastern Samar, where efforts will continue to stabilize and maintain peace under Col. Amaro's leadership.
