Palace Deliberates on Nationwide Online Gambling Ban Amid Rising Concerns

Manila: The government is currently assessing the potential implications of enforcing a nationwide ban on all forms of online gambling. Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin announced this amidst increasing calls for a total prohibition, spurred by the growing number of Filipinos reportedly suffering financial ruin due to gambling addiction.

According to Philippines News Agency, Bersamin addressed media inquiries regarding whether President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. will declare a comprehensive ban on online gambling during his upcoming fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA) later this month. This follows last year's SONA announcement, where Marcos prohibited Philippine offshore gaming operators (POGOs). Bersamin clarified, "The policy remains the same... the President is very strong about POGOs, banned na 'yan (POGOs are already banned)." He further explained that while POGOs are indeed banned, other online gaming platforms not associated with scams or fraud are still under review to fully understand their implications.

In preparation for the SONA, Bersamin highlighted President Marcos's proactive involvement in crafting his annual address. "The President has been involved very personally in the preparation of the SONA because that is the report to the people," he stated. Emphasizing Marcos's dedication to communicating government efforts, Bersamin noted, "Alam niyo si Presidente, masyadong malakas ang focus niyan sa mga ganitong bagay (You know the President is very focused on these things) because he really loves to communicate to the people the work that he has been doing, that the Cabinet has been doing, that the entire government has been doing."

President Marcos is scheduled to deliver his fourth SONA on July 28 at Batasan Pambansa.
